Lately Week 1 Reflection

First of all, I have to say sorry that I post this blog late and I do not know how to manipulate it. But I am glad to use it anyway.

About Philosophy

I am not quite familiar with “philosophy”, since I am a science student from high school. So I googled it and wished that could help me understanding this concept deeply. Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems, such as those connected with reality, existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. Philosophy is distinguished from other ways of addressing such problems by its critical, generally systematic approach and its reliance on rational argument. The word “philosophy” comes from the Greek φιλοσοφία (philosophia), which literally means “love of wisdom” (from Wikipedia).
And talk about educational technology, I would like to say that it is going to be more important in the education field. Since we have internet all over the world, we can do things that were never expected. Like now, we can have classes online in everywhere. I could still remember that when I was in high school, I broke my leg by an accident so I had to stay at home for two months. That was a dark time, high school is the most important period during a student life, it impacts a student’s future, and I missed part of it. Teachers would not give you a private tutor, so I could only learn by myself and call my friends for help. Otherwise, I can take classes online in my home, discuss with classmates or professor in email. Also, my favorite subject of mathematics is geometry, it asks students can image how a function turns into a graph. Last year I learned how to use Mathematica to graph on computer, however, I have actually learned Mathematica in my college in China. But I did not know how to use it until last year, because it was just in our textbook and we learned it even without computers. So it reminds me that only textbook is not enough, it is better for us can practice in reality.

I do not know how to define my educational technology philosophy, I am not an idealist usually, but I do believe that where there is a will, there is a way. Technology is a great result of humans’ wisdom, it will have no limit.

About Stephen Downes' article

I have to say that this article is very impressive. I cannot imagine that all things about blog happened like this early. There was a computer class in my middle school in 2002, everyone in that class had an Apple laptop were supposed to study with. Obviously, the time that they played CS was more than studying. Also, internet was little interesting for us, I did not expect that it could be such popular today.
In my opinion, there are 3 possible reasons for students in China or teachers did not accept this educational method.
Firstly, some of parents are not allowed students use internet. They think there are lots of unhealthy information on it and students are teenagers that cannot identify which is meaningful and which is meaningless. And they cannot focus on study online, there are full of advertisement of games, videos, or commodities popping out.
Second of all, there will be some unsafe factors on the internet. Since our blogs are allowed to be visited publicly, there may be some people staring your blog with unusual purposes, which makes people afraid to post what they are really thinking about.
Thirdly, most students do not have time after finishing their daily homework. There is a sentence popular in China, children cannot lose in the beginning of their life. That means, children have to learn almost everything from a very young age. Even finish the homework of school, they have to do lots of extra practices out school. All we do before college is doing all kinds of exercises about College Entrance Examination.
I have a dream that one day we do not have to learn all about examination but about what we are really interested in.
